Ex-White House Aide Arrested In Alleged Refund Scam

Claude Allen, former adviser to President Bush, was arrested this week in Maryland. He was charged with swindling two department stores of over $5,000. Allen had resigned without explanation in early February.

Allen was a trusted adviser to President Bush. Bush had nominated him for a federal appeals court judge in 2003, but Democrats blocked the move.

Allen made $161,000 in his role as Bush's top domestic policy adviser. It's puzzling that a man in his position would become entangled in a refund scam of this nature.
