James Dobson honored by National Radio Hall of Fame

James Dobson, a well known Christian author/speaker, and psychologist, is being honored by the National Radio Hall of Fame. Dobson is the head of the "Focus on the Family" radio broadcast.

As host of the daily broadcast, Dobson is being added to a field of radio luminaries such as Orson Wells, Paul Harvey, Gene Autry, Bing Crosby, Kate Smith, Jack Benny, Walter Winchell, Dick Clark and Rush Limbaugh, while the "Focus on the Family" program is recognized along with hit shows as "The Shadow" and "Your Hit Parade."

The honorees had to contribute to the radio industry for ten years on the national level. Dr. Dobson has been doing this for over 30 years. He was chosen through the Hall of Fame's first online competition. The inductees will be honored on November 8th.

Students rebuked for singing National Anthem

What a wonderful tribute to our nation by these young people. They took time out this summer to go to the California Capital and sing two songs. You would think they would be praised, not rebuked. After all, I thought this was a country of freedom of speech.

"The patriotic expression was apparently so egregious that state troopers were called in to the rotunda to rebuke the students," a statement from The Capitol Resource Institute said today.

"This was a ghastly overreaction to some students expressing their patriotism in the seat of government," said Karen England, executive director of CRI, and director of the youth conference. "These young leaders have sacrificed a week of their summer to come learn about our government system and this is the 'welcome' they receive from the government."

This was a group of 4 5 patriotic students, 14-18 year old, who came to Sacramento from all over California to take part in the Hill Youth Leadership Conference. They were excited to be there, but had to be met with the unwelcome act.

Officials said, however, it was a good lesson in liberty for those students, especially the two young participants whose father was held in a Communist prison in Romania and another student who is a Russian immigrant.

"These future leaders have seen first-hand how we are losing our liberties – including simply expressing our patriotism in public," said Meredith Turney, the legislative liaison for CRI Impact and a graduate of City on the Hill.

Turney is correct. What a terrible lesson to learn. We all know our freedoms are surely being taken away from us. When you can't be a patriot in your own country, where do you go? It sure is giving a terrible message to those that see Ameria as the land of freedom and want to move here because of it.

A site for Homeschoolers

If you homeschool your children, you will enjoy this site: Driven To Educate. A family of four, along with their dog, have hit the road back in March of 2008. They put all their material goods from their home in storage, rented out their home to a nice couple to watch over it, and took to the road in their RV.

This is going to be a year long or longer American history tour for the family. Dan, Jennifer, Mason, and Griffin are experiencing what the young boys are studying in American History this year. Jennifer had been the sole bread winner for the family while her husband was educating his boys by homeschooling them. She began to have problems with her health and ended up having to retire. She often wondered what she would do if it was the end of her life. Here is what she said on her site:

So, what would I do if I had very little time left? It’s not easy to answer. What would you do?

I thought about it a lot, and what kept coming to mind was spend time with my family and see my children learn and experience new things. Remember that we homeschool our boys, which we consider a blessed privilege, and I am passionate about it. I love to see them learn. I love it when they really “get it”. In 2008 we were slated to start American History (we study history in chronological order). I began dreaming of traveling around the country, experiencing the things we were studying about together. A yearlong history tour. A family adventure – rafting where Louis and Clark canoed, riding in a covered wagon on the Oregon Trail, walking on Civil war battle grounds, racing dune buggies at Great Sand Dunes National Park (OK – some of it’s just for fun). Now that’s living! That was my answer to the question.

Just reading their experiences makes me wish I could tag along! They have taken to the road for educating the youngsters and enjoying the trip themselves. But they have not left the main thing at home, their faith. They have probably more than once realized that God is everywhere and the angels are indeed watching over them. Tony Snow dead at the age of 53

To me, Tony Snow was one of the nicest journalists you would ever want to know. He seemed to have a heart for the people, the nation, and family. He had such a nice disposition, no matter to whom he was talking or what he was talking about.

President Bush said Saturday that he and first lady Laura Bush were "deeply saddened" by Snow's death.

"The Snow family has lost a beloved husband and father. And America has lost a devoted public servant and a man of character," the president said in a statement.

"It was a joy to watch Tony at the podium each day."

Tony Snow was the second in his family to have colon cancer. His own Mother died at the age of 38 from colon cancer.

I really enjoyed the time that Tony Snow was White House Press Secretary. He just brought to it a professionalism and a touch of caring that showed threw that smile of his. I felt, when he left, that perhaps he was leaving, not because of not enjoying the job and not entirely because of the money. I really felt he was leaving to have more time with his family. And I am sure the family loved having Tony home more with them.

Snow was an avid musician. He played the trombone, flute, piccolo, accordion, saxophone, and guitar, and belonged to a cover band, Beats Workin', which featured fellow Washington-area professionals. Beats Workin' played publicly with a number of rock bands, including Snow's friends Skunk Baxter (The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan) and Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. He was featured on an episode of VH1 Classic's Rock 'n Roll Fantasy Camp.

This is indeed a sad day for America and his family. Not only has America lost a great journalist, but his family have lost a son, husband and father. Our hearts and prayers go out to them today. I know what it is to lose a father, and it stays with you. You always wonder what might have been, wishing he could have been around to see your grandchildren or their children. The love you had for him and the memories will live on.

ACLU vying to stop naval prayer

But earlier this year, the American Civil Liberties Union wrote the Academy demanding that the prayers cease. The ACLU claims the prayers violate the so-called "separation of church and state." But Joel Oster, senior counsel with the Alliance Defense Fund, says the real intent of the letter is clear. "The ACLU wants to rid the U.S. government from anything religious. And this is just another example of them trying to get involved and trying to strip America from its religious heritage and its religious practices, and it must be stopped," Oster contends.

If the ACLU has their way, prayer will no longer be in existence in our country in the future! Give them an inch and they will take a mile! The government does not need to give into them and keep our military from praying at meals!
