If you homeschool your children, you will enjoy this site: Driven To Educate. A family of four, along with their dog, have hit the road back in March of 2008. They put all their material goods from their home in storage, rented out their home to a nice couple to watch over it, and took to the road in their RV.

This is going to be a year long or longer American history tour for the family. Dan, Jennifer, Mason, and Griffin are experiencing what the young boys are studying in American History this year. Jennifer had been the sole bread winner for the family while her husband was educating his boys by homeschooling them. She began to have problems with her health and ended up having to retire. She often wondered what she would do if it was the end of her life. Here is what she said on her site:

So, what would I do if I had very little time left? It’s not easy to answer. What would you do?

I thought about it a lot, and what kept coming to mind was spend time with my family and see my children learn and experience new things. Remember that we homeschool our boys, which we consider a blessed privilege, and I am passionate about it. I love to see them learn. I love it when they really “get it”. In 2008 we were slated to start American History (we study history in chronological order). I began dreaming of traveling around the country, experiencing the things we were studying about together. A yearlong history tour. A family adventure – rafting where Louis and Clark canoed, riding in a covered wagon on the Oregon Trail, walking on Civil war battle grounds, racing dune buggies at Great Sand Dunes National Park (OK – some of it’s just for fun). Now that’s living! That was my answer to the question.

Just reading their experiences makes me wish I could tag along! They have taken to the road for educating the youngsters and enjoying the trip themselves. But they have not left the main thing at home, their faith. They have probably more than once realized that God is everywhere and the angels are indeed watching over them. Life has just begun

Thursday night, we watched a group of 287 seniors walk across the field to get their high school diplomas. Our granddaughter was one of those students.

Most of those students were anxious to get the diploma in hand and head out for a new life. Our granddaughter was among those students that wanted to ‘vacate’ the premises immediately. She will be in college in the fall and can hardly wait. She will be embarking on a new way of life for a young girl. Hopefully, it will be an experience of a life time for her and all the other college-bound students. And, there are many of those from this graduating class.

The crowd was overflowing for this year to see the graduating class walk that last mile in their high school. And we got to see the last funny pranks by those boys and girls, ranging from blowing balloons and bouncing them over the heads of the graduates until they were taken away to giving the principal a bouncy ball when they received their diplomas. The seniors unleashed 1500 bouncy balls for their senior day prank this year. Every year the seniors have a funny prank they pull on the staff. I can imagine how long it took for them to pick up those bouncy balls, too. But, then, it was clean fun for the kids! We wondered why they didn’t just let the blue balloons bounce through the crowd all night instead of taking them up. Clean fun is much better than the kids doing some nasty prank.

When the last diploma was given and the students were presented to the large crowd as graduates, hats when up in unison. And they all got out of their seats, running across the field, ending in little groups, congratulating others on their accomplishment. Of course, a few of those students didn’t get their diplomas that night because of their not passing all their exit exams. That will have to be accomplished before the diplomas are handed out. Otherwise, they will have to take a GED test.

As those students began to disassemble and go their separate ways, I thought about our years in school and those of our two children. We seemed to be grown and most of us were off to jobs. My daughter married and had 4 children, the second of whom just graduated. Our older son went off to college and worked all through his college career. I wonder how these graduates will meet the challenge to grow into mature adults, able to manage their lives as responsible adults. They think they are grown now, having made it through high school. But tough times will surely come for most of them, challenges that they will have to learn to overcome. I pray that each of them have learned it’s okay to come back to their parents for advice and don’t think they are too old to need help with every day problems. They need to realize that parents have gone through similar things and can be a sounding board for troubles. It is much better for them to come to their parents than go to a peer. Peers seem to have the same outlook on life as the one seeking advice, and sometimes their advice is not what the seeker needs to hear.

End of an era - beginning of another

When we have children, we relish every moment of their growing years. But there comes a time when we realize they are growing up, becoming a woman or man of their own. Being a Mother, I certainly know how it feels to have your children grown and gone from home. Both of mine have children of their own. But, my daughter had a son to graduate from high school last year and is a freshman in college. Her only daughter graduates this year - only about one month away.

What is so sad is the fact it ends her career in soccer. She has played since a young child - on City League on a Co-Ed team to start with, playing with her older brother. Then, she later played on an all-girl team. When she got to JR High and High school, she began playing for her high school. She plays Varsity and has been the team captain for 2 years running. The coach said, on Senior night, that she had been the only girl chosen captain two years in a row. We are so proud of her, and really hate to see her soccer days coming to an end. They played their last home game last Thursday. They played an away game last night, and on Thursday night, she and two other seniors will wrap up their days as high school soccer players.

The Varsity girls and boys played in an Invitational Soccer Tournament last month in which both teams from their school won first place trophies. The picture here is of my granddaughter. She and one other girl were the only ones to score for the Varsity girls from their school in the entire tournament. We were so proud of her!

She has had a great time at soccer. She has also played Premier soccer ball for the last three years. But, right now, we are almost certain she will not continue to play in college. But, she will beginning another wonderful phase of her life, and we wish her well!

We need more proofreaders – or grammar teachers, possibly

I just came from Third World County. David has a post entitled It’s the little things. He speaks about the lack of correct grammar in sentences and the problem with too many apostrophes. That has long been a sore spot of mine as well. I am known to proofread when I am visiting blogs or reading articles on the Internet. If you are like me, you aren’t surprised to find some very bad mistakes. I know we all make them sometimes, but there are journalists who should know better. If all else fails, put your article into a grammar checker and get it right!

When I first started working, I worked my way up to the advertising department of a jewelry company. I proofread ads daily for the local newspaper and it taught me sight-reading like you would not believe. I skim lots of pages and my eyes just seem to fall on mistakes. Oh, I have to add, if I make a mistake (accidentally hit a wrong key and do not see my mistake), I have friends who find it. So there are other proofreaders out there, for sure. I once read an article that said the most important thing to remember before publishing an article to your blog is to proofread it to make sure everything is correct. We sometimes overlook that and, in haste, publish a faulty post.

The one thing that students aren’t taught today is how to diagram a sentence. When they learn this correctly, other things fall into place. Once you learn, you never forget. It is like typing; once you learn where to put your fingers on the keys, it is just automatic to place them there. It is the same way with taking dictation, playing the piano, etc. These things never leave your mind. I say go back to the old ways of teaching; kids came out of high school knowing how to write a paper correctly and how to punctuate!

Grandchildren will make you do crazy things

Yesterday was a very rainy day. The weatherman said it would clear up and be nice by lunch time. Well, it did neither! It rained or misted rain all day long. But, we endured it to see two of our daughter's children play in an Invitational Soccer Tournament. I believe there were possibly 8 different Varsity teams playing. Our 14 year old grandson, an eighth grader, made starter on the Varsity team. He has played soccer since he was about 6 years of age.

The one in black is our grandson. He may be small, but he is loud! He will go up against the largest player and give them a run for their money! And, he is able to score against the best.



Our grand daughter is a senior and Captain of her team. She's been a Captain for the past two years. She has also played since she was about 6 years of age. She played on City League until she started playing Varsity. She has also played Premier Soccer for a traveling team for 3 years in the Fall. We are truly going to miss her playing next year because we don't think she will continue to play in college. She is the one in white about to kick the ball. She scored the winning point in the last game of the day. Both the boys and girls teams from their school took home first place trophies and medals. The day was well spent although it meant a bad hair day today! Yes, grandparents will do crazy things for their grandkids!

First grader suspended for sexual harassment

Give me a break! What child of six knows what sexual harassment is? This world has gone wild when it comes to the ‘No tolerance’ rule in our schools, especially with these little children.

Apparently, a child touching another because the other child had touched him (in playing – wouldn’t you expect this in this age group?) causes such a stir among the teachers of first graders now days. At least, it does in Brockton, Mass., where a six-year-old boy was suspended for three days from school. The child was afraid the police was coming to get him. He had no idea what he had done wrong. Why do we have to scare these little children with ‘adult’ worries? No doubt this child was doing nothing but touching this little girl back when she touched him. But the teacher took her word that ‘he touched my skin’ to mean he was sexually harassing her!

We need to get a grip! Children will be children until they grow into teenagers. They will be teenagers until they learn how to be adults. Some children never learn because we pressure them into growing up long before they are ready. They don’t understand the adults’ worries and concerns. I think adults worry too much about children and their way of playing. Heaven help this child if they ever engage in a game of ‘doctor and nurse’! He will be ushered into reform school until he is 18!

We are stealing our children’s innocent years by teaching them things for which they are not ready. Some assume children at this age should be told about sex, sexual harassment, etc. But, I assure you, unless you are doing things you shouldn’t be doing in front of your child (or others are), and they aren’t watching unsuitable programs on television, they don’t understand half of what they are being told. There is a time to teach children about sexual harassment, but hopefully, it is not at the age of six! Keep your hands to yourself should be a rule taught to these children. And, if they are continually touching others inappropriately (which I doubt this boy was), then you have a talk with him about minding – not remove him from his school room of first graders (his friends) and make a spectacle of him in front of those children!

Another school shooting

What is going on with our nation's young? Every where you look, there seems to be one more shooting in school. Today, a student was shot by a fellow student during gym class at a Memphis, Tennessee school.

It is the second shooting reported in a Memphis high school this month. On Feb. 4, a 16-year-old student was shot in the leg in side a classroom during an argument with another student over music. The student suffered non-critical injuries and the suspected shooter was charged.

If I had a child in school today, I think I'd be wanting the school officials to install metal detectors in every door way. Then, have guards checking out the cars of every student. There just seems a need for some kids to have a gun, which is definitely not a good thing for school environment and the hot tempers of some kids. There comes a time when one has to give up some freedoms, and this seems to be one of those times! It may not be the choice of some parents. But, I would rather have a live child than a dead one! And, if metal detectors could help, why not install them?

Cross Dressing in schools - Diversity at all costs?

The Iowa's East High School in Des Moines came up with a "Bender-Gender Day" during that school's homecoming week. This is a 'cross-dressing' event where girls dress up as boys and boys dress up as girls. This even really upset lots of parents and they removed their children from area schools and began homeschooling.

That apparently includes cross-dressing, an event which has found sponsorship in other arenas from the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, which has promoted a school lesson plan for teaching boys and girls to cross-dress.

State officials in Des Moines confirmed to WND that at least 80 children whose parents were alarmed by the "Gender-Bender Day" during homecoming week at the city's East High School have moved their children from the various districts in the area into homeschooling plans. Several parents told WND that the number could be in the hundreds.

Apparently, the school thought nothing of it since it was just one day during the Spirit week where different days have different themes. But, to the parents, it was something they could not live with. Most of the families attend Christ Apostolic Temple, a church that believes that we should 'come out from among them and be ye separate.' (2 Cor. 6:14-17).

I'm a parent and there is no way I would have let my children cross-dress for a school event. This school probably never thought that perhaps the parents would object. Perhaps diversity in this state means more than teaching the children.

East High recently was the chosen location when Iowa Lt. Gov. Patti Judge announced a new state award highlighting increased diversity in the state.

"The "One Iowa Award" recognizes those who are working to create a "unified Iowa."

Judge said making that a reality takes input from Iowans "regardless of their race, age, gender, nationality or sexual orientation." The announcement had been staged to include East High students talking about the importance of diversity.

Third Grade Teacher promoting homsexuality to students

clipped from www.onenewsnow.com A website called Voice of San Diego recently profiled a third-grade teacher, Mick Rabin, who uses his classroom to promote homosexuality to his young pupils, according to San Diego-based pro-family advocate James Hartline. Hartline says parents need to know what is happening in public school classrooms, and demand control over their tax-funded schools. Hartline says the teacher has been getting away with this for years, and has now been glorified by another liberal media outlet. Rabin, he says, has a captive audience of innocent children and is using that to his advantage in order to indoctrinate children into accepting homosexuality as being normal.

This is the day

When our children are young, we know this day will eventually come. But, too often, to parents, it comes too early. We don't want to realize our children are grown up, going out into the world to experience for themselves what we did many years ago. But, it comes, even though too soon for us. It is graduation.

Yes, once again, it's Graduation Day for many of the high schools around. This is the first year in many years I can say I have someone in the family graduating. It happens to be my daughter's oldest son, Josh. We are very proud of this young man. He is a very well-adjusted person, very sensible and compassionate. He will be leaving home for college this fall, and I know Mom hates to see him go. Just the other night, she said she almost cried when she bought his Graduation card. So, I know tears will flow tonight. They certainly did last Thursday night at Baccalaureate services!

But, we would never deny our children the right to grow up and experience life on their own. Being a Mother, it is sometimes difficult to let go of the apron strings, so to speak. But, just as our parents did in the past, we must let them start life a new on their own and trust that they will take with them the lessons they have learned from their upbringing. If we did our best, then we can almost rest assured those children will not let us down. And, if they make mistakes in life, remember, they are living their lives, not ours. We can only be there for them in time of need, hold their hand, and daily pray for them.

To all the graduating high school seniors, may you find your path in life, and may it be rewarding. And, may I leave you with this thought: Acknowledge God and let Him direct that path. (Proverbs 3:6)

Woman, 95, to be oldest college graduate

When Nola Ochs' husband died in 1972, she began to take classes at the community college. She continued to take classes over the years. Then, in 2006, lacking only 30 hours to get a general studies degree, she moved from her farm to an apartment 100 miles away at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. She will get her degree this month.

Ochs beat out the record of Mozelle Richardson, who received her journalism degree from the University of Oklahoma in 2004. Besides being the oldest graduate on record, the other exciting thing for her is the fact that her 21 year old granddaughter will be graduating with her. They have both enjoyed each other's company. Ochs said she has been accepted by the other students and she fits right in.

Todd Leahy, history department chairman, wondered at first if Ochs could keep up with the other students. After her second week, all doubts were gone. Now he wants to record oral histories with her after she graduates.

"I can tell them about it, but to have Nola in class adds a dynamic that can't be topped," Leahy said. "It's a firsthand perspective you seldom get."

Tom Nelson, chief operating officer of the American Association of Retired Persons, said Ochs' achievement should inspire all of us to reach our own goals and dreams.

Check your child's MySpace

Hopefully, most parents keep up with their child's account on MySpace. I know my daughter does for 4 children. She is sitting there with them. But, one father got some unexpected news when he read his son's MySpace!

A father in Knoxville, TN, read his son's MySpace and discovered his 14 year old son was involved with marijuana and OxyContin - buying and selling these drugs. So, he took extreme action. He made up a sign that said "I abused and sold drugs." His son wore this while standing in front of the Cedar Bluff Middle School. To some, this may seem to be abuse, but I think, in this day and time, we have to reach our children anyway we can in order to keep them alive! Too many are 'reached' by their peers and get into trouble when they are very young.

The boy told his father he had done the crime and was willing to do the punishment.

The school's principal soon came out and asked the father to call it off, which he did.

By that time the boy said he had already learned his lesson. "This is embarrassing. I ain't going to be doing it again."

And the boy added, "Drugs are for losers. That's all I can say."

Those were the words his dad hoped to hear.

Oregon teacher fired after Bible references

And, Dan Harrison, father of a student at Sisters, Oregon school where the teacher taught, asked, "How many minds did he pollute?"

Chris Helpinstine, 27, was a part-time high school biology teacher. He had included Biblical reference material in their study in order to show bias in study material. He was teaching them critical thinking.

"Critical thinking is vital to scientific inquiry," said Helphinstine, who has a master's degree in science from Oregon State. "My whole purpose was to give accurate information and to get them thinking."

Helphinstine said he did not teach the idea that God created the world. "I never taught creationism," he said. "I know what it is, and I went out of my way not to teach it."

John Rahm, parent of a freshman, said he daughter had come home, saying she was confused with the supplemental material Helpenstine had provided in their class. He said the "Biblical references prevented her from learning what she needed to learn."

Students protest porn mag trip to Mississippi State

Hugh Hefner's Playboy magazine is planning a trip to Starkville, Mississippi, in order to recruit college girls from SEC schools. They were to be there today and tomorrow. But, nearly 1,200 students signed a petition to be delivered University president Robert Fogleson, asking him and other administrators to denounce the visit from the Playboy. Jordan Graham, who helped lead the petition, said he did not want to see his school represented in the October edition of the porn magazine.

"We as students feel that it's degrading to our university," Graham says of the porn purveyor's visit. "We feel that it's degrading morally, and that it's promoting promiscuity -- not academics." In addition, says the MSU student, "we feel that it's not a true representation of [the principles upon which] Mississippi State was founded ...."

Meeting with Pat Sullivan, former Heisman Trophy winner

Thursday night, we attended a meeting of the Touchdown Club of our grandchildren's high school. We had the privilege of meeting and hearing Pat Sullivan, former University of Auburn quarterback and former Heisman Trophy winner, speak.

This is truly a remarkable man. He is a great speaker, and a great motivator. Several of the football players were in attendance to hear him speak. And, he spoke to them like a fatherly figure. He told them is was nice to receive the rewards he had; they made for great memories. But, you have to put all those into perspective. Your faith, family, friends and education should mean more. It’s okay to want to achieve, but first build on your charcter, stay true to your family and friends and yourself.

Sullivan is a survivor of throat cancer. He told them that it was very important who they married later in life. He talked about how much his wife played a part in his recovery, that she was his best friend, his life partner. And, also, he said your faith is what will truly get you through when you think you can’t make it any longer. He said, when he found out he had cancer, it made him get on his knees. That’s when a person knows they can’t make it alone. And, with God and his wife, he has survived.

He said it was truly amazing that 3 ½ years ago, he was diagnosed with throat cancer. He took lots of chemo and it closed his throat completely. 2 years ago, he was still on a feeding tube and lost 60 pounds during all this. But, the other night, he was eating steak! That truly is a miracle, because not everyone with throat cancer survives. I remember all this when it happened, and he wasn’t expected to live. He took pneumonia during this time, and did almost die. But, God saw fit for him to live, and I believe he saw what a work he could do with young men, helping shape their lives, making them better young men when they grew up and got out on their own.

Visiting Choir from Europe told they couldn’t sing sacred songs

“Voices of Heaven”, an ‘all star’ choir visiting from Europe, had been brought to Michigan through the efforts of Kelli Falls, choir teacher at Three Fires Middle School. But, it seems they were told they could not sing songs that were ‘too religious’ in the Michigan school district of Howell.

The order came recently from Supt. Charles Breiner of the Howell School District in Michigan just as the Eberbach, Germany, choir arrived for its scheduled concert at Howell High School.

The 62-member choir, which came to the US through a program of the Blue Lakes Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lakes, Michigan, will not go home with a good impression of the area. The members who stayed with familes while in Michigan were upset and felt discriminated against.

Officials told the local newspaper that the censorship was imposed to bring the program into line with a policy of Howell Public Schools that limits the amount of sacred music in any performance.

"I don't know if I would call it 'scaled back' or 'censored' – and that word scares the heck out of me," Donna Hoornstra, a parent of two Howell choir students said. She hosted two members of Voices of Heaven during their recent visit.

The students said this was the first and only school that had asked them to take the songs out of their program. Some had solos that they could not sing because of having to drop some of the songs.

A parents group is now asking for the resignation of Supt. Charles Breiner. A spokesman for the Livingston Organization for Values in Education committee, Vicki Fyke, says he’s gone from promoting gay agenda to embarrassing their community internationally. He has allowed the hanging of a gay flag in the school, but he has forbidden “In God We Trust” to be on the school walls. She said they have endured two years of controversy with Breiner, and the community would be better served, if he would just resign.

Wisconsin Students planned attack on school

Two 17 year old students from East High School in Green Bay were arrested Thursday morning. They were found to have an array of guns, ammunition, bombs, and other weapons in their homes, which was raided by police. They also found suicide notes.

The school resource officer of the school found out that these two boys were obsessed with pain, death, and had suicidal thoughts. The Chief of police said these boys had learned about bomb making on the Internet.

"This was a Columbine waiting to happen, from the briefing that I've had" said prosecutor John Zakowski. "Only they know how close it was to being reality."

Zakowski said he cannot say what charges might be filed until interviews are finished, but any charges will be handled in adult court. The police chief said authorities were considering charges of conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit arson.

This could certainly have been another Columbine waiting to happen. But, thanks to the relationships the school staff has with its students, it has been stopped.

Sunday School Teacher Let Go For Being Female

I could not believe what I was hearing when this came on the radio talk show I was listening to today! This lady, Mary Lambert, has taught in the First Baptist Church of Watertown, NY, for 54 years. But, now, her pastor, Rev. Timothy LaBouf, cited the biblical advice of the apostle Paul, "I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent." He says women can do anything they want to do - outside of the church.

I have a hard time with this, considering, in most churches, it is the women who are the most active. It is the women who attend more regularly and help do the things around the church. You will find many more women in church today than you will men, in most areas. One of the radio talk show hosts, who is a preacher, did not agree with this man. But, a woman listener called in and said she agreed with the dismissal of the woman. She said she once was a singer in the Baptist Church. But, she had changed churches, studied the Bible, and took it literally than women are to keep quiet in the churches, and are not to sing or teach. This sets women back hundreds of years!

LaBouf is on the city council in upstate New York. But, he says this will not affect his decisions on the council.

Mayor Jeffrey Graham, however, was bothered by the reasons given Lambert's dismissal.

"If what's said in that letter reflects the councilman's views, those are disturbing remarks in this day and age," Graham said. "Maybe they wouldn't have been disturbing 500 years ago, but they are now."

Modern day man wants to make women seem inferior. But, this was not the intention of Jesus. A study of his life will reveal that he had respect and love for the women in his life just as he did the men. I find no where in scripture where the Lord told women they could not teach in church. Memorizing the Koran Verse by Verse

A small school in Flushing, Queens, New York, run by Muslims, is teaching the Koran.The students go from 8AM until 5PM, in the prayer room of a Mosque, to memorize the Koran verse by verse. The students take time off from their regular school studies, possibly 2 to 3 years, in order to accomplish this task.

What is wrong with this picture? While other religious-run schools in New York are to give 'substantially equivalent instruction to that of public schools, this Muslim-run school is not. According to city and state officials, they probably are going against the laws of New York.

“This is very much influenced by traditions back home,” said Imam Shamsi Ali, director of the Jamaica Muslim Center in Queens, which started its own memorization school several years ago. He envisions the children in the school becoming not just religious leaders but doctors, lawyers and engineers, helping to bridge the gap between the Muslim world and American society. “We want them to be leaders in all different kinds of roles.

”But this level of devotion to Islam has a way of causing suspicion these days. While parents whose children are in the schools said they were proud of them, they also worry about how they will be perceived.

Ward Churchill becomes a canker for U of Colorado

Canker sores can be very painful. There are numerous treatments for these sores of the mouth, which are sometimes called ulcers. You can apply pain-relieving compounds, mouth washes, and salt water rinses. But, sometimes it takes cauterizing the canker sore in order to speed healing. But, you have to be careful to apply only to the canker sore itself, and not damage the surrounding healthy tissue as well as the lips and gums.

To me, Ward Churchill is like that canker sore in the mouth, only he is a canker of the University of Colorado. He does every professor there an injustice!

CU's Interim Chancellor announced plans to fire (i.e., cauterize) Churchill on multiple grounds of serious research misconduct only a few days before Churchill gave a speech at Baltimore's Mid-Atlantic Radical Book Fair.

For the first half hour, Churchill attacked CU's Investigative report on his academic misconduct, downplaying the findings as merely "a matter of a few footnotes." Next, Churchill switched subject matter and commentary, which included:

Churchill threw lots of punches, including frequent Nazi references, and comparing others to the Nazis. He also "compared CU Boulder to German university models from the WWII Nazi era." But, the worse was when he made a joke concerning the 9/11 passengers on the hijacked planes.

"You do remember, the incident which the terrorists overpowered the stewardess on the aircraft and tweezed her eyebrows with his tweezers, until she screamingly submitted to fly the plane into a building remember that one?" Joked Churchill. "Tweezers… tweezed into submission."

Hopefully, this joker of a professor will be terminated and CU's canker sore will be healed! To me, he showed his true colors, when he started joking about the death of these people.
