Berenstain Bears Co-Creator Dies

Stan Berenstain, who authored the Berenstain Bears books along with his wife, Jan, died at the age of 82. They co-authored their first book in 1962. They developed the series with the well known "Dr.Seuss", Theodor Geisel, the then head of Random House. The object was to teach the kids to read while entertaining them. And, they did a great job! My children grew up on Berenstain Bears and Dr. Seuss.

The couple met and started drawing together in 1941 at Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art. They married right after Stan got out of the World War II-era Army service. They first did cartoons, which were submitted to magazines, and later to The Saturday Evening Post, McCall's and Collier's. Their sons joined them later, and the latest books are collectively "The Berenstains".
